Car washing night

The other night was car washing night.

Sometimes it's pizza night. Sometimes it's movie night.

Sometimes it's car washing night.

The kids were into it.

I'm afraid I was a bit distracted. And I'm afraid I took a hard working car washer with me.

But did you see all those potatoes we dug up?

Well, some of us were digging up and some of us were burying.

"Who, Me?"

We also pulled up a ton, a ton of garlic.

I'm a little lost on how to get it cleaned up. Washing seems like it would be a mistake for some reason and I'm too lazy to search online right now.

Any ideas?

the sunflowers are coming.

This year, I've sorta neglected the garden.

I planted a few things, but I haven't been out there everyday (morning and night) like last year.

This year, things have been planting themselves.

Like these mammoth sunflowers. They're at least 9 feet tall, and all volunteers.

(For those of you non-gardeners, I've learned that means they come up from the seeds released by the ones you did plant in the years before.

Now you know.)

I love the other-worldliness of the just-about-to-bloom flower.

And I love the ever so slight curve of the petals.

That's all I have to say about that.

In which I have a new favorite tiny blue flower

I don't know what they are, but I love them.

Do you have any idea how hard it is to get a bee in focus? Especially with a manual focus macro lens?

It's hard.

Snails? Much easier.

Creature in the garden (*click away if bugs freak you out*)

Here's a nice peaceful, serene picture of snap pea tendrils clinging to their trellis. This should allow those of you with fears of things that crawl to click away now and leave this space with nice lovely thoughts for your day.

I'm not sure what about snap peas tendrils is peaceful and lovely, but they just are.

These guys are everywhere in the garden boxes.

I want to call them spiders, but I think technically they're not.

They remind me of miniature lobsters.

Little tiny brown lobsters that enjoy living in garden boxes.

In which I met a shy lady bug.

The shyest of all the garden creatures I've encountered so far is this little lady bug.

(And that is totally how you spell 'shyest'. I looked it up.)

She ran around behind the stem,

And then hid behind another stem.

And then she just turned her back on me and waited for me to leave.

So I did.

Things in the garden

I planted Arugula this year.

And then forgot about it.

Now it's gone to seed.

Or bolted.

Or flowered.

Or whatever.

I should probably harvest it.

There are ants on what I'm guessing are sunflowers which planted themselves last summer.

I think it's bad to have ants on your plants.

But I don't care.

(Just like I don't care that this picture has been cropped to much and isn't quite sharp enough.

I'm a rebel like that.)

I kind of like them.

Inching along

Isaiah was outside playing with the chickens and when he came in he had this little caterpillar on his forehead.

We thought maybe everyone would be a little more comfortable if we returned it to a leaf.

I love, love a tiny inching caterpillar.

Vacation is good.

Things are growing.

puttering

This weekend was full of glorious, glorious warm sunshiny-ness. It was perfect lawn mowing weather.

And I figured, shoot, might as well plant some seeds while I'm at it. There's no way it'll freeze, now? Right? We've got La Nina going here, right?

Hopefully.

And while I'm at it, might as well rig up a trellis for those snap peas. How do you like my trellis? Pretty impressive, eh? :)

It's pretty high tech and complicated.

It was an incredibly nice, relaxed, low-commitment sort of weekend. Mowing the lawn and puttering in the garden are some of my favorite things.

Edging, not so much.
