In which I want to paint, but sew instead

I've managed to get off the couch and sit down at the table with the sewing machine. I'm learning how to draw with the free motion foot.

 

This one I did several months ago, but I don't think I ever showed it here.

 

This one I did tonight. I want to add a little jack-o-lantern to the swing, but I'm gonna have to go to Joann's for some orange thread.

And the last one. I was trying to rework the first Spring tree, but with the right colors of thread. Looking at it here I think I might need to add a bit to the bird - it's looking rather skinny for spring time.

I want to figure out how to mount them to a wood frame. Or something. For now the masking tape holding it to the wall is doing it for me, but it can't last forever.

Things I'm making...bag edition (yes, again)

This is a heavy duty canvas so it can hold a lot heaviness-wise. I can not wait to try it with different color trims and see how that changes the whole vibe.

Dave's been taking those drawstring bags I mentioned awhile ago to work with his lunch packed inside. (Only the manly looking ones, of course.) Some of the ladies were admiring them, so I whipped up a few more for them using some scraps from my stash.

(Do any of those fabrics looks familiar, Mom?)

I can not, for the life of me, think of a good way to take a picture of these drawstring bags. Unless I stuff them full. Any ideas?

Things I'm working on...painting edition

I've been wanting to experiment with recreating this photo with paint for a while. A couple nights ago, I got the chance!

It's actually mixed media - the bird is a paper silhouette.

I think I need to try again - the angle of the bird is off just enough to change the feel of it.

Things I'm making...big ol' bag edition

See i told you I'm branching out.

A bag with short little handles.

This one is from Heather Ross' Weekend Sewing book.

With a few changes. Of course.

It's perfect for library trips, or taking a large amount of fabric to someone else's house (Yes, I did do that just this last weekend.) Or for packing up what you need for an overnight trip somewhere.

If you're the sort of person who takes over night trips.

And of course pockets. No bag is complete with out at least one pocket.

Things I'm making...purse edition

Here's a purse style bag I just finished up this week.

I started it about 6 or 7 months ago and then got stuck and put it away. Far far away.

But then, while shopping in my fabric stash, Emily found it and I remembered it and thought this would be a fine time to finish it.

((Did you know you can do that? Come on over and go shopping in my fabric stash?

Leave me a buck or two and help get closer to being able to buy the fabric I truly want. Cause you know I still have way to much fabric in my stash to justify going out and buying more.))

I forgot to get a picture of me wearing it, but the handle is a long, to be worn over the body. It's the style I always make and wear.

But watch out, I'm branching out pretty soon here.

It's got a sweet vintage button closure.

And the inside is full of pockets for all my stuff. I love, LOVE having a spot for everything. Which, by the looks of this picture, is just more bags.

(Am I the only one that has to carry my shopping bags with me all the time or there's no way I'd remember them?)

Things I'm working on...

That right there is a free-motion foot. It's slightly tricky. I'm trying to get the hang of it.

Here's my first attempt at painting/collaging.

It's made of canvas, burlap, cardstock, twig & paint.

It's about 3" x 3". 

I need to figure out how to finish the edges and sort of seal it.

In which paper bags make good houses

Every so often we break out a fairy tale lesson plan book I found at Learning Palace. The kids absolutely love the crafty parts of it.

On this day we were learning all about Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We made little houses out of paper bags and little bears and Goldilocks by folding the bottom of the paper together just so to make the drawings stand up. So simple. And so thrilling to the kids.

Brennan gave me very specific instructions on how his house should look.

He didn't have a copy of the bears and Goldilocks so he decided to make the neighbor's house. There's Julie coming to the door. :)

The next day they raided the cabinets and made houses for the Three Little Pigs. The boys had a fabulous time blowing each other's houses in.
