just in case you've been missing the ants

Did you ever wonder how ants got into the ant farms? Me neither. Until I received a vial of ants and strict instructions not to touch them.

There was some plastic tubing in the box and no instructions, but geniuses that we are, we figured it out.

There were, however, several warnings about not touching or holding the ants since they bite.

So we sent them on a long glorious slide into the kingdom of the ants. I hope they're liking it there.

the ants have been busy

Here they are this morning. That mound up at the top is getting dangerously close to the spot where it opens to give them their single drop of water.

I wonder what these two are talking about?

(Maybe its one of those "Hey back up, I was here first." "No, you back up I'm not going anywhere!" things.)

And lookit! By this afternoon they had a trail going in the pile of 'sand' they pulled out of their other trails. I don't know why this thrilled me, but it really did.

And look at how that one is bracing himself against the walls with his back legs. These ants are super interesting.

I have another 'farm' I found at the thrift store and I'm thinking about hooking it up to this one to give them more room for trails. I love ant trails. I think I'm gonna do it.

Just two nights ago the kids were talking about wanting a pet. Ellen thought a rabbit would be just right and Isaiah is pro cat. And then, out of the blue...

the ants for the ant farm that Jeff and Wendy gave them for christmas arrived. Perfect timing.

They're all females. No queen.

Did you know queens can live twenty years?

And the males, aka "princes" sole purpose is to mate and then die.

We do not need little baby ants or everlasting ants.

We've got plenty to look at already thank you.
